Boxed 3"to 4" External Micrometer by Shardlow of Sheffield
As you can see from the photos, it comes with maintenance instructions as well as the adjusting wrench, and there is a small sachet of silica granules to absorb any moisture and help prevent rusting. !
It is in good working order, and, with the vernier it reads to 2/10,000" and can be estimated to ~ 1/3 to 1/4 of that depending on how good your eye-sight is!
On the down-side the barrel has had the name K G Hunt engraved into it - but that will help to identify it if there are others around.... The only other potential problem is that I do not have a 3" test-bar to set it with.

dial test indicator guage on micro-adjustable base
The gauge itself is made by The L S Starrett Co in the USA, and measures in 1/1000". It is operated by pushing in the button at the back. The dial can be rotated behind the needle so that the zero on the dial is aligned with the hand with the button pushed in a bit.
The gauge can be positioned by loosening the knurled thumb-wheel on the block holding it to the upright rod, which can itself be angled by lossening the knurled thumb-wheel at it's base. Once roughly positioned it can be finely adjusted by screwing in or out the smaller thumb-screw at the front of the base, tipping the upright back or forward.
The base is plenty heavy enough for the set-up not to move as the button is pushed in or released.

Nylon clock line by the metre
'Imitation gut' line - this is NOT Perlon but a multi-core line with a mesh-weave sheath (all in one extrusion). It is designed for stringing squash racquets! When a weight is put on it this will get a bit longer but will revert to its original length when the weight is removed, unlike the old nylon lines which continue to stretch all the time they are under load, and stay stretched when the weight is removed.
This is my normal choice of line for all longcase and fusee clocks...
It is 1.25mm diameter & weighs in at 9.5 gm for the 21-foot length (which is what most shops sell as enough for 2 sides of a longcase), though personally I use 3 metres for each side of a longcase - saving ~20cm each side, nearly half a metre/clock!

Phosphor-bronze clock line by the metre
Phosphor-bronze clock line, 1.4mm diameter. Designed and made specifically for clocks, it has the advantage over steel wire lines that it is softer than brass and therefore will not mark it, but steel wire does.
It weighs 64 gm for a 21-foot length (which is what most shops sell as enough for 2 sides of a longcase).
Personally I use 3 metres for each side of a longcase - saving 8" or about 20cm each side - nearly half a metre/clock!

Nylon-coated steel wire clock line by the metre
Nylon-coated steel wire line, at 0.75mm diameter this is a thin line, but is plenty strong enough for almost any domestic clock. With a safe working load of 25lbs for each line (down from the pulley and back up to the seat-board it will be fine for a 50lb weight!
It weighs 13.6 gm for a 21-foot length (which is what most shops sell as enough for 2 sides of a longcase). Personally I use 3 metres for each side of a longcase - saving 8" each side, or almost half a metre per clock!
